Quick Guide To Harvard Referencing Style

Harvard Referencing also calledAuthor-Date system, is a method of referencing used mainly in Australian Government publications. It has two components:

• In-text citation, which is used for references in the assignment body.

• Reference lists, which is used at the end of every academic paper.

These two components are different for various types of sources like books, journals etc. It even with the number of authors (single or multiple).Let’s have a brief overview of some of the specifications:

For Books

In-text: (Author/s name or organisation name along with Year of publication) Reference list: Author/s family name, followed by initial/s or organisation name along with Year of publication, Title of book in italics, Edition statement, Publisher, Place of publication, Page number, Date viewed

• With one author

Example: In-text: (O'Connor 1957) Reference list: O'Connor, DJ 1957, An introduction to the philosophy of education, Routledge & Kegan Paul, London.

• With two authors

In-text:Example: (Zikmund& D'Amico 1989) Reference list: Zikmund, WG & D'Amico, M 1989, Marketing, 3rd edn, Wiley, New York.

For Thesis or Dissertation

In-text:(Author/s name or organisation name along with Year of publication) Reference list:Author/s family name, followed by initial/s along with Year the thesis was completed, ‘Title of the thesis in single quotes’,the type of thesis,University where the study was undertaken,Place where the university is located, Date viewed,. In-text:(MacFarlane 2002) Reference list: MacFarlane, I 2002, 'Aboriginal society in North West Tasmania: dispossession and genocide', PhD thesis, Universityof Tasmania.

Journal Articles

In-text: (Author/s name or organisation name along with Year of publication) Reference list: Author/s family name, followed by initial/s along with the Year article was published,‘Title of article using minimal capitalization and enclosed in single quotes’, Title of journal In Italic capitalize the Main Words in the Title, Title of series if applicable,Volume, Issue,Pages, Date viewed, .

• With one author
